101 Things To Do: Vacation Adventures in Mountain Country

Great idea #36

Tram—The Jackson Hole Aerial Tram is back! After two years of construction, the sleek, new $31 million red box is up and running. Ascend 4,139 feet above the valley floor into the alpine zone for a walk, or just to gaze into the mountains (pg. 39).  Check the Jackson Hole Resort website for schedule and prices.

Chairlifts—Not only do these lifts get you up above it all for an impressive view of the scenery, but they also provide a quick access for hikers and mountain bikers. Both Snow King and Grand Targhee mountain resorts offer rides (pg. 42).

What is it? Pollen on Jackson Lake

Written by wade on July 23, 2009 – 11:00 am -

Pollen on Jackson Lake, Grand Teton Park, WY

Thanks for all the guesses on our first “WHAT IS IT?” Some funny ones there! Several sort of close. But Holly Gaves got it exactly right. It is pollen on Jackson Lake, taken on June 29, 2009. See the photo showing the shoreline. The other three photos were taken last summer, July 2, 2008 and show pollen on both Jackson and Jenny Lake. The Jenny Lake tour boat has just sliced through the floating pollen.

Coming soon will be the first “WHERE IS IT?” We will keep trying to puzzle you with unique views of our area. Stay tuned blog fans! – Bob Woodall

Great idea #26

Fire department chicken fries and barbecues—Throughout summer volunteer fire departments throw fundraising chicken-fries and BBQs. All visitors are welcomed. A great way to meet locals and experience a sweet slice of American pie.

Great idea #16

Music festivals—A whole score of music awaits mountain country travelers, including the 22nd Annual Yellowstone Jazz Festival with jazz performances at various locations in Cody and Powell; the Jackson Hole Cowboy Jubilee in September; the Grand Teton Music Festival in Jackson Hole; and Grand Targhee’s Bluegrass and Targhee Fest and music camps. Jackson’s Center for the Arts hosts a number of music and dance concerts, stage presentations, a rock-and-roll camp, and art shows.

Crescent Moonset over Teton Pass, Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Written by wade on July 14, 2009 – 5:20 pm -

Time-lapse photo by Wade McKoy—Two days after the new moon, this time-lapse photo shows the crescent moon setting over Teton Pass as the evening darkness settles on Jackson Hole, followed by star movement throughout the night. In the first treatment I used Photoshop to brighten the night exposures, which also shows a lot of “noise.” I then built it again without brightening the night sky. Car lights are seen coming down the highway over the pass, and I spotted several meteorites (shooting stars). The scene then cuts to sunrise the following morning.

Technical data during moonset: Mode—time value, shutter speed .8 sec (exposures over one second will show the motion of the moon and blur it); ISO—100; Interval between photos—one minute; Total time—50 minutes

Technical Data during night exposure: Mode—Program (the camera set the exposure length at 15 seconds); ISO—400; Interval between photos—three minutes; Total time—over five hours

Fireworks at Snowking and Teton Village this year!

fireworks in jackson hole, wy

The July 4, 2009 fireworks display at Teton Village was viewed from the top of the Bridger Gondola by hundreds of people.  The people that watched from the Bridger Restaurant area were also treated to a view of the fireworks set off in the town of Jackson, and then a ride down in the moonlit landscape.
