Gelande Quaff

Ben Skelly helps his team, The Hostel, win the 2012 Gelande Quaff World Championships in Teton Village, Wyoming, on leap-day Wednesday, Feb, 29, with his own leaping catch during the final round. The Hostel topped the field of 17 teams, besting 2nd place New Zealand with acrobatics such as catching and chugging a full mug of beer sent flying off the end of a snowboard, sliding a ski outfitted with four mugs down the bar for a group quaff, and roundly out-chugging the Keewees, countrymen widely known for their high-caliber drinking abilities.

The Hostel's coach, Håkon Lagerqvist of Drammen,Norway, said, "The Hostel not only won the World Championships, I feel they changed the North American game of quaffing. I have not seen showmanship like this since Budapest, '86."

Team Ski Patrol missed the competition altogether, delayed in sweeping the wind-strafed mountain for lost skiers. Wind and snow also pelted the Teton Village venue vigorously during the event.
