Rock Climbing in Ten Sleep, WY

This Fourth of July I decided to escape the crowds of Jackson and check out the climber's "non- festival" and world class limestone sport climbing outisde the tiny town of Ten Sleep, WY.  Featuring over 600 bolted routes between 5.9 and 5.14, Ten Sleep Canyon appeals to a wide range of climbers.  Many of the popular cliffs are shaded in the afternoon, perfect for climbing on warm summer days.  Check out Aaron Huey's comical guidebook for more info, and here's a cool video on Ten Sleep climbing from Cedar Wright..

Grand Targhee Resort will begin opening partial sections of their lift-serviced downhill mountain bike trails today, and plans to be close to 100% open by the weekend.

Whistler Ski Resort for Sale

The Wall Street Journal reports:

In recent weeks Intrawest representatives have approached Russian billionaire Vladimir Potanin about a potential acquisition [of Whistler Blackcomb]. It is unclear what price they have put on the British Columbia resort.

Intrawest's owner, private-equity firm Fortress Investment Group LLC, is also exploring other options for Whistler Blackcomb, including spinning out the property into a separate company and filing for an initial public offering.

Bullfighting and Bull Riding Classic, Cody, WY

On Saturday, June 12 the second annual Dusty Tuckness/Kanin Asay Bullfighting and Bull Riding Classic filled the Stampede Rodeo Grounds arena in  Cody, Wyoming with some incredible action. The night featured a freestyle bullfight event and bull riding.

Freestyle bullfighting was developed in America by the rodeo clowns who protect bull riders from being trampled or gored by angry bulls.  While bull riders try to hang on for an 8 second ride, the bullfighters are engaged in a 70-second freestyle display and are evaluated based upon the aptitude they display in controlling and maneuvering a 2,000 pound opponent. Precision in jumping the bull, contact with the bull, and handling of the barrel are additional criteria used in awarding the prize.  By the way, no harm is done to the bull in rodeo bullfighting and he always lives to trample a cowboy another day.
